What Tools Do I Need to Install a Wrought Iron or Aluminum Fence?

Our Free Iron and Aluminum Fence Install Kit
Our Free Iron and Aluminum Fence Install Kit

With a vast majority of our customers being DIY-ers (do-it-youselfers), we get this question quote often.  To start, we offer something no other manufacturer does: a free installation kit.  The kit is fairly comprehensive and is meant to save you some cost and those annoying back-and-forth trips to the hardware store.  The kit varies based on what you are ordering, but for a full iron fence/ gate/ driveway gate order, you would receive:

  • 3/8″ Hex Driver (to fasten brackets w/ screws)
  • Hex Driver Extension (to assist w/ angle)
  • 12oz. Touch-up Paint

  • Outdoor Construction Adhesive (to fasten caps to posts)

  • 3/8″ Drill Bit (to drill posts for female portion of hinge)
  • 5/8″ Drill Bit (to drill gate frame for male portion of hinge)
  • 1/4″ Hex Driver (to fasten gravity latch to gate)

  • *3/8″ Drill Bit (to drill posts for female portion of hinge)
  • *3/4″ Drill Bit (to drill gate frame for male portion of hinge)

That full kit would cost you over $125 shopping for it at one of the big box stores.  We also have an install kit for our aluminum fence and gates as well that is equally comprehensive.

So we get you started off pretty well.  A list of other potential tools you will need could include:

  • String Line along with stakes (wood or steel rebar) to fix the string to
  • Shovel and Post Hole Digger for post holes.  You can also rent a motorized post hole digger/ auger for faster post hole digging.
  • Tub, wheelbarrow or powered mixer for cement
  • Measuring Tape
  • Level
  • Rubber Mallet and Regular Hammer
  • Hacksaw or Sawzall for trimming panels (if necessary)
  • Drill or power driver
  • Wrench and socket set
  • Square or Angle Finder
  • Bags of concrete mix
  • Water

And that’s it folks.  The closest thing to something ‘specialized’ is a motor driven post hole digger.  They are not necessary, but are rented all over the place at very reasonable prices and your back will thank you if it is a big project.

I've been working in the fence industry since 2009 with a wide array of installation, sales and marketing experience. I've had lots of experience with different types of iron and aluminum fence and gate installations. Generally a 'DIY' kind of guy when it comes to a wide array of projects.
